The first Mdundo Awards took place in May 2014 and went down the history books as the first ever East African i-Awards . Everything was done online and you got to give them a thumbs up for having a digital awards ceremony.
2015 saw the second event go down and big names such as Sauti Sol, Willy Paul and even Chocolate City’s very own Victoria Kimani took the gold home.
For those who may not understand, unlike other awards where voting or nominations take place, with Mdundo Awards the nominees are selected absolutely by the organizers of the awards. The concept essentially is to recognize the best in terms of music download numbers.
Different from the earlier ceremonies, this year’s the third annual Mdundo Awards of the year 2017 was held at the Ongea Summit at Sarit Centre.
Shyqo Koinange who is the Head of Music at Mdundo said that the philosophy behind the Awards was to acknowledge Musicians based on the real consumption of their Music, instead of a panel or a voting process which is often practiced in other awarding ceremonies. Koinange also remarked that he was glad to be hosted by ONGEA.
The inaugural awards saw Rabbit King Kaka walk away with more than half of the award’s categories scooping four awards including the most downloaded hip hop songs but things once again were totally different this year.
Timmy T Dat was nominated and awarded the most downloaded hip hop song award for the year 2017.This was a surprise to most people as no one really expected that the hip hop award would go to him.
Willy Paul just as for all time has remained visible on the list with both the most downloaded singles plus male gospel artist of the year, Mercy Masika, Kymo together with Stigah and finally Sauti Sol scooping most downloaded secular, group and Afro-pop respectively.
